Meet the Great Pyrenees
The breed’s ancestors likely came west from Asia Minor thousands of years ago, settling into the Pyrenees as the shepherd’s night guard against wolf and bear. French aristocrats adopted them; the mountains kept them. An American, Mary Crane, began importing the dogs in 1931 and built the breed’s stateside foundation — the AKC recognized the Great Pyrenees in 1933.
