Meet the Irish Wolfhound
The wolfhound did its job too well: Ireland’s last wolf was killed around 1786, and the unemployed hunter faded so completely that by 1836 it was listed among the animals that had disappeared from Ireland. From 1863, a British army captain, George Augustus Graham, spent decades rebuilding the breed from surviving strains crossed with Deerhounds and Danes. The AKC recognized the resurrection in 1897.
