Meet the Pekingese
The breed was a guarded treasure of the Chinese court for centuries, bred and pampered inside palace walls. In 1860, during the Second Opium War, British troops looted the Old Summer Palace and carried five Pekingese to England — one, presented to Queen Victoria, was named Looty, with the period’s unembarrassed candor. From those few dogs, the West built its entire line.
