English settlers brought their working bulldogs to the American South in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where the breed became the farm’s utility player: catching unruly cattle and feral hogs, minding the property, riding in the truck bed. For two hundred years it stayed a working secret of the rural South — never shown, never registered, just used.
