Meet the Saint Bernard
Nearly a thousand years ago, monks founded a hospice for travelers on a treacherous Alpine pass, and in the 1660s they acquired their first dogs — as companions and watchdogs who turned out to possess a genius for finding people in snow. Generations of hospice dogs worked the drifts alongside the monks well into the modern era. The AKC recognized the Saint Bernard in 1885, among its earliest breeds.
