Maltese
The Maltese has held the same post for over two thousand years: the lap, occupied with authority. Some traditions deserve good cloth — substantial 6.0-ounce cotton, garment-dyed after sewing so color settles into the weave, a wide rib collar, and a fade that improves with keeping.

Meet the Maltese
The breed is named for the Mediterranean island whose harbors moved silk, spice, and — ancient writers suggest — very small white dogs around the classical world. Ships carried them everywhere; laps received them. Through empires, courts, and show benches, the assignment never changed: companion, full stop. The Maltese was among the AKC’s earliest breeds, registered from 1888, and has rarely left the ribbons since.
