Best in show, best in field, same dog.
The American Kennel Club keeps a list of Dual Champions — dogs that have won championships in both the show ring and the field, a résumé most breeds never attempt. The Brittany owns that list: more Dual Champions than any other sporting breed, with the five hundredth crowned in 2006 and the count still climbing. Think about what that means. The same orange-and-white dog that stacks politely for a judge will, given a weekend, outwork the best bird dogs in the country. No other breed does both this well, this often — and the reasons trace back to some very practical French hunters.

The whole hunt in one dog
The Brittany comes from the windswept farm country of Brittany, in northwestern France, where dogs like them appear in tapestries and paintings from the seventeenth century. The locals who developed the breed were not aristocrats with kennels; they were farmers and, by long tradition, poachers, who needed one modest dog that could point, retrieve, and keep quiet about it. That thrift is still the breed’s whole design: a leggy, close-working hunter, under forty-five pounds, wash-and-wear coat, no specialist anywhere in the pedigree.
Living with a Brittany means living with the engine. This is a dog built to hunt all day, and the energy does not politely excuse itself in a suburban yard; they need an hour or more of real running, most days, forever. Meet that and everything else is easy — Brittanys are soft-tempered, eager, almost telepathically tuned to their people, and they take a harsh word hard and encouragement instantly. Under-exercised, they pace, spin, and quietly vibrate. Exercised, they are the sweetest workaholic you will ever share a sofa with.
Keeping one happy
Grooming
The coat is the easy part: flat or lightly wavy, medium length, and happiest with a quick brush once or twice a week. No fancy trimming required. Check ears after every outing — a Brittany’s field time collects burrs and seeds — and keep nails short. Baths only when they have earned one.
Training
A famously willing student — Brittanys were bred to work close to one hunter and take direction, and it shows. Keep everything upbeat: this is a soft breed that shuts down under harsh corrections and learns at speed for praise. Channel the nose early with fetch and find-it games; the instincts arrive either way.
Exercise
Plan on an hour a day of genuine aerobic work — running, fetch, swimming, field games — not a stroll around the block. Brittanys make superb jogging and hiking partners and take to dog sports like they invented them. A tired Brittany is a housepet; a fresh one is a project.
Diet
An athlete’s appetite in a medium dog: feed a quality food in two measured meals and adjust for the season’s workload — a hunting weekend burns real calories. Keep them lean; the breed’s happy metabolism usually cooperates. Watch treats during training, since a Brittany will work just as hard for kibble.
The spaniel that pointed
The breed was formalized in 1907, when a male named Boy became the first registered épagneul breton in France, standards following the same year. American hunters imported the dogs in the 1930s, and the AKC recognized the Brittany Spaniel in 1934. In 1982 the club dropped “Spaniel” from the name — the dog points, after all, and always had.

Do Brittanys shed?
Moderately — the flat, medium-length coat drops hair year-round at a manageable level. Weekly brushing keeps most of it off the floor. Not hypoallergenic.
Are Brittanys good family dogs?
Excellent ones for active families — gentle, soft-tempered, and playful. The energy is the only caveat: this dog needs real daily exercise to be the easy housemate they can be.
Can a Brittany live in an apartment?
Only alongside a serious running habit. Their size fits; their engine usually doesn’t. A fenced yard and an athletic owner are the better match.
