In February 2011, a BuzzFeed editor named Peggy Wang published a short post asking whether the “Pomsky” — Pomeranian crossed with Siberian Husky — might be the cutest designer dog ever. The internet agreed instantly and asked where to get one. There was a complication: the photos weren’t pomskies, because for practical purposes the dog did not yet exist — no documented breeding program had made one. Demand arrived years before supply, which may be a first in the history of dogs. The internet, having invented a dog, waited for reality to catch up. Reality, eventually, did.

The meme, domesticated

The first widely documented intentional litter arrived in America in 2012, bred by artificial insemination for the mother’s safety, and clubs followed — the International Pomsky Association formed in 2014 to bring some order to the gold rush. Order remains partial. The Pomsky is a cross, not a breed: no kennel club recognizes it, and between a five-pound parent and a fifty-pound one, the dial swings wide. Size, coat, and temperament vary by litter and by puppy. The photogenic mini-husky look is a frequent outcome, never a promise.

What is promised: a genuinely northern dog. Pomskies are clever, quick, and busy, with real exercise needs, a talkative streak inherited from both sides — expect howls, woos, and commentary — and a plush double coat that sheds in earnest. The husky software includes escape research and a prey drive; fences and leashes are load-bearing. Under-occupied, they redecorate audibly. For people who wanted a husky but honestly audited their square footage, a well-bred Pomsky is the workable compromise: most of the wolf styling, a fraction of the sled.

Keeping one happy

Grooming

A dense double coat that means it: brush several times a week, daily during the twice-yearly blows when the undercoat leaves in handfuls. Never shave — the coat manages heat as well as cold. Baths stay occasional; this is a self-cleaning northern coat with a full-time shedding habit.

Training

Bright and quick, with a husky’s independent streak — they learn commands fast and comply thoughtfully. Keep sessions short, playful, and rewarded; drilling bores them into mischief. Socialize early, train the vocal cords toward a quiet cue, and treat recall as unreliable around anything that scurries.

Exercise

An hour a day of honest activity — brisk walks, hard play, puzzle work for the clever brain. A secure yard matters: the husky side studies fences professionally. Bored Pomskies are loud, inventive, and destructive in that order, so the exercise budget is really a peace treaty.

Diet

Two measured meals for a small, athletic dog with a thick coat that hides weight gain from the eye — go by hand, not by look. Count training treats against the total. Energy needs run higher than the size suggests; quality fuel in modest, honest portions.

Demand first, dog second

The Pomsky may be the first dog breed created by the internet: a 2011 viral post generated the audience, and breeders spent the following years producing the actual animal — first documented litters from 2012, breed clubs by 2014, and a registry of hopeful standards ever since. No kennel club recognizes the cross. The order of operations shows, and honest breeders say so.
